Zusammenfassung:Contemporary society seems obsessed with time, yet current debates on temporality have rarely taken its history into account. Given that the twentieth century was characterized by frequent ruptures and numerous supersessions of competing régimes d’ historicité, it is remarkable that time has not played a more central role in its analysis. This article surveys, first, the role of time in the writing of history. Second, it discusses the history of time along three poles: standardization vs. pluralization, discipline vs. f lexibility, and acceleration vs. Eigenzeit (one’s own time). Third, it sketches three concepts – temporalization, rhythm and simultaneity – as building blocks for a »time-history« of the twentieth century.
