Zusammenfassung:The occurrence of iron-rich concretions in intertidal areas of the Lower Saxonian Wadden Sea is described. These are found on top of sediments, mostly after erosion of former Mya arenaria beds. They usually contain an iron core around which layers of reduced and oxidised authigenic iron-rich minerals are arranged more or less concentrically. For the most part, these cores are composed of intact ammunition shells or fragments thereof, clearly relating the origin of these concretions to dumping activities after the second World War. Possible modes of formation of such concretions are discussed.
