Zusammenfassung:Many bishops went with mixed feelings to the Second Vatican Council. Their expectations were diverse. But it came as a surprise that they left the Council with an optimism for which they hardly found reasons. The article shows that this optimism was above all grounded in the discovery of a new kind of "ecclesiological theology". This ecclesiological theology makes two things clear: first, ail plights of this world are also plights of the church; second, these can be and partly have already been overcome because the church is the sacramental présence of the victorious end of the history of salvation in Christ. In this church as the sacrament and mystery of the saving event of Christ there cannot exist anything that is against God and against humanity. If ail the branches of theology (exegesis, dogmatics, pastoral theology, social ethics, etc.) reflect the faith of the church, they proclaim this victory. These sectors of traditional theology, apart from the above understanding of the church, are not really theological. The Synod of Würzburg, permeated by the dynamics of this new theology, has intuitively made its documents - documents of hope.
