Zusammenfassung: | This paper looks at the portrayal of the Ottomans and their rule in the post-1990 Albanian-language history textbooks published in Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro. The examination of textbooks published in the Communist period offers a comparative perspective. The paper shows that the image of an Ottoman oppressor and the Ottoman 'yoke' is constructed through a strategy of marginalisation of the Ottoman content, rather than through systematic negative stereotyping of the Ottomans. The presentation of history in textbooks is moulded by the aim of projecting the sense of Albanian nationhood marked by continuity, unity and a quest for freedom. The Ottomans are present in the Albanian-language textbooks only insofar as their portrayal furthers a desired vision of the Albanian nation. Those aspects of the political, economic and cultural life in the Ottoman period which would challenge that vision are downplayed or omitted. As a result, the Ottomans and, in particular, the Albanians' relationship to them and their state are misconstrued. The sense of Albanian nationhood is purged of the Ottoman legacy. The popular and historiographical stereotype of the Ottoman 'yoke' is reinforced. |
