Zusammenfassung:Summary: The article aims at giving an idea of the coverage of Jews and Jewish history in West German history textbooks during the last forty years. The author rejects critical comments blaming the textbooks for being superficial and too sketchy in their coverage of the topics. He describes such criticism as being outdated. The German history textbooks focus on ancient Israel, on the persecutions of Jews in the Middle Ages as well as on the fate of the Jews during the Nazi period and, finally, on the history of the State of Israel since 1948 in the context of the Middle East crisis. The author also weighs the merits and the shortcomings of the portrayals given in current textbooks against the background of the German-Israeli textbook recommendations adopted in 1985, and he also gives some critical comments on certain passages of these recommendations. He mainly blames the textbooks for using an "objectivistic" language which is an impediment to explanations and moral judgments. He critizes the books for still viewing the Holocaust from the perspective of the culprits rather than from that of the victims.
