Zusammenfassung:The essay discusses the question whether there are signs for the development of an underclass in Germany. The essay is subdivided into four parts: Firstly, some results and controversies of the research of underclass in the USA are summarized. In the second part, the criteria for a definition of underclass are determined, in the third part, the thesis is discussed that the development of an underclass in Germany would most likely appear in parts of the foreign population, since the social situation of this group is below average according to all indicators.
