Zusammenfassung: | Recent studies of China's economic system have focused upon the nature and progress of reforms. As a by-product of these studies, however, many Chinese writers seem to have settled upon a common characterization of the pre-reform system. The article takes a new look at the pre-reform system, focusing upon the role of central planners in co-ordinating economic activities within different locales. The primary objective of this inquiry is to identify distinctive features of Chinese planning that might explain spatial outcomes, such as "cellularity", associated with China's development during the Maoist era.
