Zusammenfassung: | Includes bibliographical references (p. 329 - 333) and index The basic thesis underlying the book is that all organization and management theory and practice is based on images, or metaphors ... . Chapter 2 examines the image of organizations as machines and illustrates how the mechanistic style of thought underpins the development of bureaucratic organization.... Chapter 3 examines the idea that organizations are like organisms.... In chapter 4 there are pursued implications of viewing organizations as brains.... Chapter 5 explores the idea that organizations are cultures.... In chapter 6 is a political metaphor used to focus on the different sets of interests, conflicts, and power plays that shape organizational activities.... In chapter 7 the focus shifts to a more abstract metaphor: the idea that organizations are psychic prisons where people become trapped by their conscious and unconscious thoughts, ideas, and beliefs.... Chapter 8 invites (the reader) to understand organizations as flux and transformation by focusing on four "logics of change" that shape social life.... Chapter 9 explores the idea that organizations are instruments of domination.... Chapter 10 brings all the ideas together by presenting a practical case study that illustrates how one can use the metaphors presented in this book as practical framework for "reading and shaping" organizations.... Chapter 11, "Using metaphor to manage in a turbulent world", summarizes and synthesizes the major theses of images and their implications for managers and practitioners ... . The book as a whole stands as a treatise on metaphorical thinking that contributes to both the theory and the practice of management. (HoF/übernommen/Ko.) |
