Zusammenfassung: | This collection takes a case study approach to enter into and explore spaces of 'Second-Third World' interaction during the Cold War. From the dining halls of a university, to hospital wards, construction sites, military barracks, pubs and more, the chapters drop the scale down from the global to the particular to better see the work of ordinary people as they conceived, constructed, shaped and reshaped 'Second-Third World' relations over time. While many spaces of socialist internationalism were physical places of encounter, others were more abstract, embodying ideological and personal passions. In exploring these spaces, the contributors show how varied Second and Third World actors understood and connected the particular in their worlds to ideas about gender, race, and selfhood, about time, the nation, and the modern, and more. This volume explores the everyday spaces to bring multi-dimensional, multi-actor histories to a vital center ground. |
