Zusammenfassung:Every week, the media report stories of environmental destruction. Most of this destruction has been caused either directly or indirectly by economic activity. While the media attention mainly focuses on climate change, serious issues are also emerging regarding the availability of fresh water, other resources and biodiversity. It is almost 50 years since The Limits to Growth was first published but economists have still not provided a definitive answer as to whether continued exponential economic growth is possible. This chapter explores the issue from a combined evolutionary-ecological economics perspective, linked to a standard post-Keynesian framework. It considers both the immediate pressures of climate change and whether the world can continue consuming more resources indefinitely. It finds that technological advances may prolong the potential for growth in some cases but in other cases, fixed boundaries cannot be avoided. It concludes with practical recommendations on how to live within our natural limits.
