Zusammenfassung: | Traces the involvement of Judy Feld Carr in rescuing Syrian Jews from persecution as hostages. Following pogroms in 1948, most of the Jews had fled from Syria, but ca. 5,000 remained. Those who then tried to escape were often imprisoned and tortured. Carr worked partly with the Canadian Jewish Congress, but mainly on her own, establishing contacts with Jews in Syria and with various governments (Canadian, American, and Israeli) that played more or less important roles at different stages of her 25 years of activity. Carr was instrumental in smuggling many Jews out of Syria (often through bribery) and in supplying material and moral support for the families of imprisoned Jews. In 1992 "the gates opened"; for geopolitical reasons, President Assad allowed Jewish emigration, then halted it, then allowed it again. Carr also used other means to rescue Syrian Jews, including political lobbying and influencing President Clinton to intercede with Assad to allow the Jews to emigrate. |
