Zusammenfassung: | Over the past few decades, control and governance in global commodity chains and global production networks (GPNs) have been intensively debated in geography. This paper contributes to this discussion by empirically focusing on globalized wine production. It does so by analyzing processes of qualification and requalification of wine (Callon, Méadel, & Rabeharisoa, 2002), which we consider to be significant factors in the control and governance of GPNs and which have profound consequences for the spatial organization of the wine industry. More precisely, our aim is to analyze to what extent the qualification processes for bulk wine differ from those for fine wine. We argue that bulk wine - and the flexitanks used to transport it - must be considered a disruptive technology that leads to a fundamental restructuring of the global wine industry. |
