Zusammenfassung:The New Silk Road or Belt and Road Initiative corresponds to an enormous international infrastructure investment program launched and largely financed by the People's Republic of China and providing for the construction/modernization of port, road, railroad, pipeline, energy and communications networks linking up China, Eurasia, Europe and Africa through economic corridors. The goal is to reduce transportation costs and open up new markets, another aim is to address strategic resource supply and security issues for China. Thanks to the initiative, trans-Eurasian railroad container conveyance is gaining some ground compared to east-west maritime transportation. While New Silk Road projects may boost global trade of the EU and notably Austria and Italy, there are also risks. Smaller partner countries, particularly emerging markets, may become exposed to debt distress, and there is a danger of possibly fueling corruption. A problematic factor is frequent Chinese dominance in projects (financially as well as logistically), which may lead to local resistance and in exceptional cases even to project suspensions. The most involved European partner countries can be found in the south-east of our continent. In the long run, the participation of this region in the New Silk Road could, in a favorable case, contribute to overcoming its traditionally peripheral position in Europe.
