Zusammenfassung:The article's focus is on the first 20 years of theological interpretations of Vatican II (1965-1985), and especially on some key moments and figures of the debate: the Lefebvrites' rejection of the council, the early division of mainstream conciliar theology between "Concilium" and "Communio", and the reception of Vatican II beyond the geographical boundaries of Europe and North America, that is, in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Feminist theology, the symbol of one of the major rifts within Catholic post-conciliar theology between an American gender-sensitive theological language on one side and the rest of Catholic theology on the other, originated from the North American theological schools and it remained more confined to the North American area. But at the 1985 Synod of Bishops on the reception of the council, it had become clear that the debate about the significance of the council was an hermeneutically divisive issue for the Catholic churches of the Western world; in contrast, Catholic churches from Africa, Asia, and Latin America and feminist theology had taken a different path, which was neglected and soon forgotten by the center of world Catholicism.
