Zusammenfassung:After sketching the general economic background by trends in some macrostatistical indicators the paper investigates the trends in gross and net monthly real earnings in the 90s pointing out their peculiar yearly periodicity and the possible underlying causes. Then the distribution and inequality of gross earnings in the period 1988-1994 are analyzed based on data of the surveys on earnings by categories of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office. Data indicate that while a considerable increase in the inequality of earnings can be detected from 1988 to 1990, after 1992 earning disparities remained at about the same level.
