Zusammenfassung:In Hungary the number of agricultural co-operatives changed but slightly since 1988. However, their average land area has been reduced from 4,082 to 1,557 hectares. The land area they possessed in 1988 is now cultivated by private farms (54 per cent), agricultural co-operatives (36 per cent), and various other business undertakings (10 per cent). Their share in agricultural production came to 47.4 per cent in 1988, and it did not decrease significantly. Larger co-operatives have been transformed, into several different enterprise forms, while the smaller ones mostly maintained the co-operative form. The co-operatives of the present take the leadership in cereal farming and cattle-breading, while their horticultural production declined. In 1997 they possessed roughly the same mechanical hauling power per unit land area as 10 years before, however, they employ the half of the labour force which indicates a significant improvement in labour productivity.
