Zusammenfassung:Water is evolving into an issue of "high politics" in the region. It is a scarce resource - and with high population growth supply shortage will get even worse - and a shared one. Regional cooperation has become necessary to diminish the impact of shortage. After an overview of the water resources (supply and demand side) in the region, the author examines water-related conflicts in three river systems (the Jordan, the Euphrates, and the Nile) and analyzes the efforts to solve them. Finally, he discusses American involvement since the 1940s in crises over water. (DÜI-Cls)
