Zusammenfassung:The author's intention in this article is to explain urban primacy in turn-of-the-century Argentina, focusing on Rosario, the country's second most important city by 1890, and the only place capable of seriously challenging Buenos Aires. Rosario controlled an important part of the rich grain belt that sustained Argentina's rapid growth. It was perfectly located to handle international exchange, but failed in its attempt to translate its auspicious economic and geographical advantages into an urbanisation free from the suffocating tutelage of Buenos Aires
