Zusammenfassung: | The majority of French-speaking African countries south of the Sahara possess relatively well-organised social security schemes, but generally only for wage earners and public employees. The numerically largest categories of the population made up of farmers, petty traders and craftsmen are still not covered in most of these countries. Gabon, however, has recently made a praiseworthy stride forward by extending social security coverage (employment injuries, old age, disability, survivors, health care, family allowances, maternity) to all the country's nationals and thus ensuring them a reasonable standard of well-being.
