Zusammenfassung: | In recent years there has been a rapid expansion in the area of East Indonesia planted or seeded to lamtoro (Leucaena leucocephala) by government agencies, individual farmers etc. This plant was successfully used in Amarasi to replace the lantana plant in 1930. A unique farming system has evolved in Amarasi around this tree species (lamtoro). The author describes the main features of this farming system and explores its potential for raising living standards of people in tropical and sub-tropical mountainous areas where soils are poor and rainfall is low.
