Zusammenfassung: | Yaqona is the traditional Fijian beverage. It is made from a species of the pepper family. Beyond its prominent role in all rituals and ceremonial events as well as social gatherings, the yaqona plant itself became increasingly important as a cash crop for native Fijian communities located in peripheral areas e.g. on Kandavu island. After a brief summary of the social aspects of yaqona in Fijian life, the writer describes and analyses some economic aspects of its cultivation and the derived livelihood through its commercialisation with reference to Fijian periphery.
