Zusammenfassung:Having briefly reviewed the main issues surrounding the economic reforms since 1978, the author suggests a model for economic growth. The model incorporates the objectives of the economic reforms without being fundamentally opposed to the socialist doctrine of income equality. The expansion of the service sector is viewed as an essential and integral part of the proposed system. Services in China are compared with those of other low-income, middle-income and industrialised nations and selected services in this country, including transportation, retailing, catering and personal services, are analysed.
