Zusammenfassung:In their effort to incorporate traditional knowledge and ressource-management systems or techniques into modern life, Pacific Island governments face a development dilemma: how to implement forms of economic development which are in the conflict with traditional resource-management systems that are based on communal-property concepts. After exploring how environmentally sound traditional knowledge and management were, the author considers some examples of knowledge and techniques that might usefully be borrowed from the past and strategies that can help to integrate past knowledge into present development.
