Zusammenfassung:U.S. trade deficits and the five-year rise in the value of the dollar till 1985 have led to strong pressures for changes in U.S. economic policy. The U.S. has been pressuring South Korea to accelerate the appreciation of its currency (won) and open its markets wider in order to narrow the bilateral trade imbalance which has developed since 1982. South Korea has responded by purchasing more U.S. goods in place of Japanese products in response to the U.S. request. The paper explores U.S. trade policy in the context of protectionism and discusses South Korea-U.S. trade relations in the light of South Korea's development including the "Japan factor". (DÜI-Sen)
