Zusammenfassung: | After reiterating the recognized similarities of the four Asian newly industrializing economies (NIEs: Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan), the paper examines the initial conditions of these economies, points out their differences and attempts to reinterpret the economic miracles of the NIEs. In the light of the different initial conditions, both geophysical and social-demographic, and the differences in timing of the take-off into sustained economic growth, the evolution of development strategies and policies and the resulting economic achievements are related to infer that "economic miracles" are not equally miraculous.
