Zusammenfassung:The author examines three competing approaches to the political economy of agrarian change in Java. First, he examines the work of William Collier and his colleagues, which framed the debate in the early 1970s in terms of the relationship between technological change and the decline of traditional redistribution mechanisms; then the "neo-Ricardien" approach is discussed. Finally, the author considers Gillian Hart's "clientelist" model which identifies patron-client relations at the village and supra-village level as the driving force in Javanese agrarian change.
