Zusammenfassung: | This paper critically analyses the efforts of the Nigerian government to promote the development of science and technology. It focuses on the National Policy on Science and Technology which was formulated by the Ministry of Science and Technology in 1986. The objectives of the policy are derived from the national objectives defined in the Fourth National Development Plan of Nigeria, and are aimed at increasing and strengthening the technological base of the country. The paper shows that nearly five years after its adoption, most of the policy's plans and strategies are yet to be implemented. Obstacles to implementation include imbalances in the educational system, the absence of an atmosphere that motivates research, neglect of the role of the humanities and insufficient regard for the importance of legal and managerial skills. The author argues that science and technological development must be approached from a multifaceted perspective. (Documentatieblad/ASC Leiden) |
