Zusammenfassung:Considers the immense amount of scholarship undertaken on Bach's vocal music since the 1950s. The new chronology of Bach's vocal music by Alfred Dürr and Georg von Dadelsen in the 1950s, with important additions and clarifications by Yoshitake Kobayashi, was just a beginning. Significant contributions to the literature on Bach's vocal music have been made over recent decades by scholars such as Elke Axmacher, John Butt, Eric Chafe, Stephen Crist, Don Franklin, Andreas Glöckner, Robin A. Leaver, Michael Marissen, Robert Marshall, Daniel Melamed, Martin Petzoldt, Markus Rathy, Joshua Rifkin, William H. Scheide, Hans-Joachim Schulze, George B. Stauffer, Renate Steiger, Christoph Wolff, and Peter Wollny, among others. In addition to monographs, articles, and presentations on Bach's vocal music by these and other scholars, significant attention has been devoted to this repertory both in Bach journals and serials. Focus on Bach research was particularly intense around the years 1985 (celebrating 300 years since Bach's birth) and 2000 (celebrating 250 years since Bach's death). This essay is presented in two parts: The first provides a chronological overview of Bach's vocal works while noting some of the most important sources for further research into particular issues, genres, and pieces; the second provides an overview of various approaches scholars are taking to Bach's vocal music and discusses representative examples of each approach.
