Zusammenfassung: | Sketches the evolution of the symphony by focusing on six 18th-century symphonists, whom the author terms great: Sammartini, Jan Václav Stamic, Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach, Carl Philip Emanuel Bach, Joseph Martin Kraus, and Boccherini. Each had a distinctive artistic personality, invented an aspect of the symphony, and left behind a wealth of music which can be enjoyed on its own terms. The watchword, evolution, is often associated with a story of style culminating in the symphonies of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. Evolutionary stories are both necessary and problematic. Two unavoidable ones for the early symphony are: periodicity and cyclicity. It is important, however, not to confuse periodic symmetry and cyclic unity with stylistic coherence as such. |
