Zusammenfassung: | What is the importance of thinking through gender in relation to diversity issues? In most contexts in which gender equality is seen as an integral part of contemporary diversity policies and aim of diversity politics, the case seems very clearcut at first sight: women should be on an equal footing with men. Yet, how selfevident and ‘natural’ is the binarism of gender, and what do the concepts of women and men imply? In order to demonstrate that these questions are anything but irrelevant or merely academic questions, I would like to briefly refer to a news story that made the headlines of mass media publications around the globe in 2009. It concerns the case of a young, highly talented South African athlete at the 2009 track and field world championships in Berlin. |
