Zusammenfassung: | On three occasions, examiners of Gottfried Silbermann's organs referred to a document entitled Requisita eines vollkommenen und beständigen Orgel-Wercks, whose author is unknown. Whoever penned this guide took the wording from Andreas Werckmeister's Orgel-Probe (1698), organizing and shortening the text into 12 numbered paragraphs. Examinations by Johann Kuhnau and Gottfried Ernst Bestell of the Freiberg cathedral organ in 1714, by Johann Samuel Beyer and Elias Lindner of the Freiberg Jacobikirche organ in 1718, and by Theodor Gerlach of the Rochlitz organ in 1727 reveal many similarities, due to their dependence on the Requisita. Their reports also provide additional information about the qualities of Silbermann's work. It is possible that Silbermann himself was the author of the Requisita, a speculation that is supported by the fact that the document does not specifically address testing the organ's temperament. Silbermann's approach to organ temperament was conservative in comparison to that of Werckmeister. (RILM) |
