Zusammenfassung: | The present volume will add to the renewed interest in the Civil War. Consisting of the journal and letters written by Major Osborn, chief of artillery, between July 1864 and the last military review in 1865, this well-edited book details army men, materiel, arrangements, and movements and adds new and fascinating perspectives on such issues as the commanders' control over Sherman's "bummers" and the burning of Columbia. Although somewhat lifeless in relating the domestic side of the army, Osborn's accounts reveal much about the personalities of Sherman and other officers and the "modern" war they practiced. |
