Zusammenfassung:The genus Spio was reidentified for the south-eastern North Sea. The most common species in German waters are S. filicornis, S. martinensis and S. goniocephala. The reidentification revealed that most of the specimens, which had been identified as S. filicornis in earlier investigations of the German coastal waters, are in fact 5. martinensis.Spio martinensis was first found in 1970 off the island of Norderney. The species occurs primarily in shallow areas with fine sands and rather high hydrodynamics. In contrast, S. filicornis lives in subtidal depths on fine sands, and S. goniocephala also inhabits the subtidal area, but prefers coarser sediments. The previous interpretation of S. martinensis being a newly recorded species in German coastal waters in 1994 is due to misidentifications in the past.
