Zusammenfassung:Previous research has made Empfindsamkeit or empfindsamer Stil into a dubious concept by insisting (since Ernst Bücken) that Empfindsamkeit be understood as a reaction to the Enlightenment or to rationalism. Studies in literary history during the 1970s (especially those of Georg Sauder) have established that Empfindsamkeit is a tendency of the Enlightenment itself. Its essence lies in a harmony of understanding and feeling. In Musical Empfindsamkeit, too, the requirement of a touching depiction of sensibility is accompanied by a sober warning against disproportionate expression. Contemporary discussion of composition and performance shows the same balanced perspective. (AN: 1986-6573) (RILM)
