Zusammenfassung:St. Louis, Washington Univ., Diss., 1969
A detailed consideration of J.C. Bach's repertoire of church works, written during his formative years in Italy (1757-62). Changes in location of J.C. Bach manuscripts since World War II are discussed, a probable chronology is established from correspondence and autograph dates, and some works thought to have been by Bach are proved spurious. The works reflect the general trend of Italian church music at the time, and show Bach experimenting with what were to become after 1761 his most important operatic style traits. Detailed formal analysis reveals the influence of binary and classical instrumental sonata form; in many choral movements the orchestra carries the main thematic material. Also discussed are the composer's fugal style (shown to be Italianate), movements in 18th-c. 'Palestrina style', instrumental textures, and the problems of performance practice.
