Zusammenfassung: | "Rosemary Mayer (1943-2014) kept a journal for most of her life. Her journal from 1971 is remarkable for revealing Mayer, at age 28, in the process of becoming an artist. During the late 1960s, she experimented with conceptual art as a student at the School of Visual Arts and in 0 TO 9, the journal of experimental art and writing. In 1971, she began to experiment with fabric as a primary medium for sculpture and to participate in a feminist consciousness-raising group, both of which led to her deepening commitment to making art and increased involvement in the New York art world. With deep self-awareness and honesty, Mayer used her journal to record this pivotal moment in her life and her career. In her entries, she reveals her plans, ambitions and insecurities about her work, as well as her insights about the art of her era. She also reveals how being an artist became interwoven into all aspects of her daily life, from concerns about money, to being in love, to reading books and, watching movies, and to hanging out with friends. The result is a striking document of the entanglement of art and life and an intimate view into the New York art scene of the 1970s. Illustrated with images of her sculptures, drawings, sketchbooks, and apartment, this expanded edition of Excerpts from the 1971 Journal of Rosemary Mayer-previously published in a limited edition-includes a new introduction, additional entries, and an appendix"-- |
