During the late 1960s, she experimented with conceptual art as a student at the School of Visual Arts and in 0 TO 9, the journal of experimental art and writing. In 1971, she began to experiment with fabric as a primary medium for sculpture and to participate in a feminist consciousness-raising group, both of which led to her deepening commitment to making art and increased involvement in the New York art world. With deep self-awareness and honesty, Mayer used her journal to record this pivotal moment in her life and her career.
