Zusammenfassung:The book was published to commemorate the 220th anniversary of the Society of Patriotic Friends of the Arts, the forerunner of the National Gallery in Prague. This collection of essays is a sort of autobiography of the National Gallery in Prague, whose existence is partly based on the generous acts of giving and sharing. The essays pay homage to its founding fathers, individual donors and institutions, artists and collectors, who contributed unconditional gifts or temporary loans to its collections, made art exchanges or were beneficial in various other ways both to the Gallerys collections (ranging from the Old Masters, graphic art and drawings, and the arts of Asia and Africa, to 19th-century art and contemporary and modern art, including architecture). The book also includes treatises devoted to the history of art collecting and the formative role of generosity and magnanimity in the process of establishing art-collecting institutions. This comprehensive picture is further enhanced by excerpts from philosophy texts, literary works and poetry books that place the issue of generosity into a broader ideological context.
