Zusammenfassung:A prominent member of the second generation of American abstract painters after the war, Frankenthaler broke onto the American art scene with an approach to painting unconstrained by rules and a capacity for improvisation that have rewritten the story of the genre. With her innovative technique of stains and blots of paint, Frankenthaler explored a new relationship between colour and form, expanding the potential of abstract painting in ways that still inspire artists today. Working with colour and space, abstraction and poetry, the artist stood out for her unique ability to combine technique and imagination, experimentation and improvisation, taking her practice beyond the limits of established canons and pursuing a new freedom in painting. The exhibition presents a broad overview of Frankenthaler’s work, looking in depth at the evolution of her personal style through the different periods of her career. A selection of paintings and sculptures, produced between 1953 and 2002, holds a dialogue with the creations of her artistic peers, including Anthony Caro, Morris Louis, Robert Motherwell, Kenneth Noland, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, David Smith and Anne Truitt. The catalogue Helen Frankenthaler: Painting Without Rules that accompanies the major retrospective examines the painter’s artistic affinities, influences and friendships. At the heart of the volume are essays by Douglas Dreishpoon, in which he makes interesting comparisons between Frankenthaler’s works and those of other artists with whom she had ties, in particular David Smith, Anne Truitt and Anthony Caro
