Zusammenfassung:In celebration of the 25th wedding anniversary of Crown Prince Frederick of Prussia and Victoria, Princess Royal, art historian and curator Wilhelm von Bode arranged an Old Master exhibition in 1883. It would go on to become one of the most influential art shows in the early history of German museum exhibition design. The exhibition was to present a concept for the re-arrangement of the Berlin museums, in which Bode criticised the reigning academic presentation of works of art, especially the separation of the genres. Instead, he wished to create an overall aesthetic impression (Gesamtwirkung) within the exhibition rooms; he proposed a combination of various exhibits similar in style, displayed within a setting inspired by the interior of collectors’ homes. The exceptional design of this art show has never yet been reconstructed, described, or analysed. This chapter provides a deeper understanding of this elaborate curatorial and design concept. By presenting recently found photographic material, and incorporating these photographs and contemporary reports and records into diagrams and sketches through which to understand light sources and object juxtaposition, the chapter will discuss the creative possibilities of reconstructing and interpreting past exhibitions such as this.
