Zusammenfassung: | How does the design of mannequins in Japan and Korea speak to ethnonationalism? Modern museums in many countries in Asia are tools through which discrete and united nations are imagined, and museum mannequins play a critical role in this. Based on interviews and surveys with exhibition designers and curators at several national museums in Korea and Japan, this chapter analyses the discourse of racial difference and multicultural understanding as viewed through museum mannequins. It demonstrates how museum mannequin design relates to other forms of material and visual culture that also have a critical role to play in national identity formation, including painting, dolls, film, clothing, and social media. I show that mannequin design stands at the critical intersection of class, commerce, gender, and tradition. |
