Zusammenfassung: | Folk Traditions in Interiors was a cross-epochal project launched in two socially and historically different phases, but in both cases in connection with state formation (after 1918 and after 1945). To help the project suc- ceed, a program promoting folk art in modern living spaces was carried out during the interwar period. To this end, national and international exhibitions were held, model stores were opened, and a fashion, even a form of snobbery, was cultivated in connection with this type of interior decoration. After the Second World War, these efforts were renewed and the Center for Folk Arts and Crafts was founded. Folk art was elevated to the status of national art, and its use in interiors was regarded as combating both petit-bourgeois tastes and the cosmopolitan aesthetic. Over the decades, the connection between folk tradition and modernity and modernization was emphasized in the context of discussions of the function of interiors and the cultivation of atmospheres in standardized living spaces. |
