Zusammenfassung:The most recent research about late antique villas in Tuscany has made it possible to more precisely depict the countryside’s situation during the fifth century, which is undeniably a pivotal period. While many sites seem to be abandoned during this century, putting an end to the ‘villa system’, others were transformed and re-functionalised in various forms (recovery of materials; installation of artisanal structures; residential use; funerary reuse; conversion into a Christian place of worship). However it is interesting to note that several villas were experiencing major restructuring at the same time, demonstrating the continued presence of a certain elite in the countryside, such as the Oratorio villa or the villa of Aiano- Torraccia di Chiusi. Others are still characterised by the presence of imported African ceramics until the sixth century, despite the construction of structures in perishable materials. We, therefore, feel it is important to nuance the view of a deserted and devastated Tuscany in the fifth century.
