Zusammenfassung:e discourse of design begins with the insight that the modern form of use is freeing itself from its ties to tradition and lore. Modern designers, seeking answers to the perceived contingency of form, increasingly orient themselves to the concept of function. e question that follows is, what function this discourse of function itself has for the modern design of everyday objects. On the one hand the discourse shows, that the concept of function is far more complex, open and indeterminate than is o en assumed. On the other hand the concept of function has the e ect of distinguishing design from art, technology, cra and fashion. In the end the discourse on function does not lead to a reduction of design to purely functional forms, but has the exact opposite e ect: namely, the permanent revision and variation of forms of use. e core of the discourse on function is that modern designers, according to their self-image, have become specialists for functions: Only they design and reject, re ect and create ever new forms for ever new functions.
