Zusammenfassung: | In this article, the specific aesthetic understanding of purpose in modern architecture is discussed on the basis of Theodor W. Adorno’s Berlin Werkbund lecture on Functionalism Today, as well as the writings of Adolf Loos, Alois Riegl and Adolf Behne that he consulted. Since the end of the 18th century, the concept of purpose has been at the core of the re ection of architecture and its conditions. Immanuel Kant’s aesthetics and his introduction of "practicality without purpose" are fundamental to the term, which is virulent in modern times. The Kantian aesthetic responds to the fragility of the ideal order of architecture from antiquity to the baroque. From his time on, modernity is characterized by the fact that the subject determines criteria for the architecture by means of its own re ection on the purpose. The opposite role is played by the category of ornament, which is linked to moments of emotion and to the task of merging aspects of the irrational. |
