Zusammenfassung:The figure of a young indigenous woman - which appears both on coins and in engravings, paintings and other visual productions from the 15th century to the present day, condenses two very different political and cultural senses. In times of the New Kingdom of Granada, territory of present-day Colombia, it was an allegory of the Americas, but with the centuries, was charged with the energy of the political debates and became a republican and libertarian emblem in the so-called New Continent. From an art history perspective, this book deals with studying this transformation, in which the images complemented the written discourse -in the manner of visual arguments- to form the appropriate ideology for a change of era. This look at art history in a cultural key opens a novel interpretative dimension on the political symbolism in the Independence of Colombia.
