But Pregunta el retrato (The portrait asks) is, in first instance, due to the fortuitous discovery of an enigmatic batch of images that, between moldy junk and old newspapers, rescued minutes before they ended in the trash. "All the images -mostly portraits- belonged to the archive of the newspaper Novedades, founded in 1935 by my grandfather, Ignacio Francisco Herrerías, first as a Sunday supplement and, from 1939, as a morning newspaper. I ignore why this particular batch of images, corresponding to the year 1940 (some from 1941), was moved to the cellar of the family home and slept there, hidden, for eight decades. The accidental encounter with these images encapsulated in time (and what a historical moment) was for me, a sign." |
