Zusammenfassung:Commodore John Barry was commemorated by monuments in both Philadelphia and Washington D.C. at the beginning of the twentieth century. A further monument was erected in Ireland, in County Wexford, in 1956. While both of the monuments in the US were instigated by Irish America, only the D.C. commission was to prove controversial. This had nothing to do with the naval hero and more to do with the sculptor selected in competition to carry out the commission. The Irish-American societies, rather than leaving the choice of sculptor in the capable hands of the Barry Statue Commission and its chosen panel of experts, demanded to have an active role in the process. Their involvement resulted in an outcome that can only be described as mediocre. This essay examines the Barry statues and their process and in so doing brings to light the names of many Irish-American sculptors long since forgotten, while also revealing the politics at play in monument commissioning. This was not the first time that the choice of a selection panel in the awarding of a sculpture commission was rejected. However, it was surely the first time that the successful model was rejected not on aesthetic grounds but rather on the life choices of the sculptor.
