Zusammenfassung:The "Cirtean Confederation" in the heart of northern Numidia was an oddity in Roman Africa. The name is a modern term dervied from its capital Cirta (Constantine in Algeria). This compilation of papers recalls that the Confederation was the end product of a long process that can be traced back to the late second century BC, although the first hard evidence of it dates from the beginning of Trajan's reign. The numerous inscriptins unearthed since the nineteenth century reveal that this territory, made up of four colonies and various castella, was administered autonomously with magistracies covering functions that were often unlike others elsewhere in Africa during antiquity
