Zusammenfassung: | Although nineteenth-century French art remains a cornerstone of many American museum collections today, little is known about the ways in which such institutions built holdings of drawings in this field. This article surveys the topic, using the Cleveland Museum of Art and its early purchases of nineteenth-century French drawings as a case study. These acquisitions and their context facilitate a better understanding of the evolution of public collections of nineteenth-century French drawings as well as the market for and curatorship of such works. |
