The changing times' views on animals and animal welfare in captivity are reflected in the buildings and in their relationship to the public. In its more than 150-year-old life, the garden has changed character from a modest menagerie to one of the leading zoos in the world. It opened under very primitive conditions in 1859, and only after expansions 1861-1873 could it begin to compete with other gardens in Europe. A large number of architects have left their mark on the Zoo throughout its lifetime, most recently international capacities such as Sir Norman Foster and BIG. Buildings and projects are presented in text, drawings and photos, of which a large number recorded specifically for the book.
